MY EXPERIENCE
It was a remarkable experience during my final year first
semester academic session. A particular course called Comparative Grammar posed
a great challenge to the students, I inclusive. Students formed various groups
to help discuss and understand the course but it was not making out. The
semester examination was hastily approaching, five days away. Comparative
Grammar was the first to be written by the final year student of English
Language and literary studies of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education,
Owerri, this alone induced fear amongst students and morale dropped.
This gave me concern considering the large number of students
retaking the course with us. I thought within myself that if these various
groups can come together and share views and ideas, we can all gain from it. With
this in mind, I scheduled a meeting with the course representative and a few
members of the class. I emphasized on our hard work since our first year in
school up to the final year and the excellent results we have recorded so far.
I told them that we can overcome this challenge if we can brainstorm on how to
handle the situation and help ourselves and that all ideas are valuable to us
now.
After a long deliberation, we agreed to organize a tutorial
class for the course. I was selected to co-ordinate the class. We also selected
four other students who will be the facilitators. As the co-ordinator, I
delegated the course Representative to send messages across on the new arrangement
and told the other students to inform their friends. The following day, I
carried out research on the course gathering materials from the school library
and from a telegram provided by the lecturer to assist students on the course.
The first day of the class marked twenty five students in
attendance – students were given room to air their views, ask questions on the
course and the facilitators did a great job in answering the questions while I
co-ordinated the whole processes. We recorded a huge success after a three hour
session and scheduled to return the following day. I shared the remaining
topics among the facilitators and gave some exercises to all the students in
attendance.
The following day, I and the facilitators came two hours
before the said time of the class to discuss on the remaining topics. That day,
the number of students increased to about forty. It was becoming an interesting
class. On the examination day, I could only see smiles on our lips as we
entered the examination hall with ease and made excellently well. The students
could not stop singing my praise after the examination for organizing such a
wonderful tutorial. They lifted me high in appreciation. This caught the
attention of one of the lecturers and the news spread like wild fire amongst
her colleagues. My lecturers called me and told me that they were greatly
impressed with my charisma and encouraged me to do same on other courses. One
of the lecturers told me that I was a great leader and gave me information
about this leadership forum to participate in the exercise. It was a great
experience seeing so much change in the result of the students through this one
act.
